24 Apr - San Churros, Subiaco

After dinner at George's Meze, we all headed to San Churros for a drink and some sweets. This place was packed, and it was lucky that we were able to get tables together to fit all 9 of us.

I had a "Hot & Cold", which consisted of a traditional Spanish hot chocolate, with a scoop of white chocolate icecream. It effectively was a chocolate affogato. This was like sludge .. especially once all the icecream was mixed in. Very rich, very sweet, I felt a bit wrong after finishing it. But it was gooooooood.
CB and I shared some 'Churros for Two' with cinnamon sugar. One pot of milk chocolate for me, and one pot of dark for CB. Mmmm.... I've said it all before though...

24 Apr - George's Meze, Subiaco

A whole group of us went out for my Aunt's birthday last night. She chose a Greek place in Subiaco, which specialised in meze, small dishes of food akin to tapas. Everyone at the table chose the regular "main size" menu, whilst CB and I opted to try some of the meze dishes.

We had the potato wedges, whitebait, meze plate and a small greek salad. I would've grabbed the menu items off their website but it looks out of date.

The potato wedges were expensive, but really good. It didn't look like value for money, but the wedges were very chunky, hand cut, and had just the right ratio of crisp edges and fluffy potato inside. The aioli served with the wedges was very tasty too.

The whitebait was CB's pick and wasn't too bad. With a splash of lemon, these were tasty, but not as crispy as I imagined they would be. It was served with a potato and garlic dip, which was OK.

The meze plate consisted of grilled octopus, pan fried squid, keftedes (meat balls), sausage, haloumi cheese, tzatziki, turkish bread and more of that potato and garlic dip. Since CB doesn't eat red meat, I ended up eating the meatballs and sausage and sampling the squid and octopus. The sausage was nice, the keftedes to me were a little dry. The octopus and squid were good. The octopus was cooked with chilli, whilst the squid had some charred taste but not a lot of colour, so not sure how that was done. The dip went well with the turkish bread, it matched better than the whitebait.

The greek salad was refreshing and light. The fetta was surprisingly creamy (and not salty) and the onions must've been soaked prior to get rid of the zing. Tasty stuff, although the olives weren't pitted and way too salty for my liking. CB mopped them all up though.

Other reviews of George's Meze had praised the attentive staff, but our experience wasn't quite so. It took awhile to take our orders, and when food started to arrive, the wrong dishes were presented to our table a couple of times. These were quickly rectified though, and our bill was correct, so credit for them for doing so.

23 Apr - Grill'd, Mount Lawley

For a bite to eat on the way home, CB and I met up at Grill'd at Mt Lawley, where 'Cinos to Go' used to be located. This place supposedly got good reviews in the paper, and recently opened up in Perth. Their advertising slant is that their burgers are supposedly healthier than the competition.

After searching through their website, I found that their most popular burger was the 'Mighty Melbourne' or 'Almighty'. However, looking at the WA menu, it translated to the 'Wild Wild West' burger, ableit $2 more than Victoria's prices. It consists of beef, cheese, bacon, egg, beetroot, salad, herb mayo and tomato relish. So I ordered one of those, CB ordered a 'Bird and Brie' and we shared a serve of chips and herb mayo.

This place isn't exactly fast food, you place your order and sit or stand around. If you dine in, you get a number and they bring the food out to you. It took about 10 mins or so before we got our food. As can be seen in the picture, the burgers to me looked a bit small and not that appetising, but after the first bite, I was really enjoying it. Surprisingly, my plate was not dripping with grease (this burger is quite similar to a 'Cop the Lot' from Fast Eddy's but with less grease), the only thing that was dripping out was the tomato relish. Whilst less greasy, it wasn't dry either. So a thumbs up for their burgers, although a bit expensive ($13.50 just for the burger).

The chips were quite good too, and sprinkled with a herb salt. I could taste rosemary, not sure what else was in there. The herb mayo was good too.

CB's burger was sweet (it had cranberry sauce in it) and not to my tastes. But she seemed satisfied with her option too.

19 Apr - KFC, Beechboro

The greens aren't part of KFC's health revolution .. they are a means to justify me eating dirty dirty KFC ... haha. Since Mum, Dad & wagg were having KFC for Mum's birthday today, I invited myself to grab some of the greasy goodness. I ended up having 3 pieces of chicken (2 hot and spicy and 1 original), chips, potato and gravy and coleslaw. After eating, I didn't get that dirty feeling that I normally get, the greens must've worked! haha.

Dad brought home some cake from a church fundraiser. I had a slice of that, which was moist and sweet. Mum also made some glutinous rice balls, with a pandan syrup for dessert. Yumbo! There goes my exercise from this afternoon!

18 Apr - Tan Hiep Hung Vietnamese Takeaway, Girrawheen

Yesterday, CB and I went for a drive down Marangaroo Drive to this little takeaway shop, where those Bánh Mì Thịt came from. We pulled into this little shopping complex which effectively looked like a "Viet-town" (a rip off of Chinatown), as there was a Vietnamese grocer (they all seem to be Vietnamese around here, apart from Northbridge), 2 butchers and video store. There was even a Cantonese BBQ house, with roast meats hanging in the window. Eventually, we found the place we were looking for, and ordered 3 rolls: BBQ pork, chicken and sardines. They were still $4 each, but were made to order. I forgot to ask for less butter/margarine, but this time round they weren't so heavy.

I had the BBQ pork and shared the sardine version with CB. CB had the chicken one but let me have a bite to taste. They all had the same ingredients apart from the meats.

The BBQ pork version was tastier than the pork version I had yesterday, although there was less of it because the meat was chunk and thick, as opposed to thinly sliced. This meant that there wasn't even coverage of meat in the bun, so one bite was vegies and another bite was meat. I didn't get that many chillis in it either, but I'm afraid to ask for more next time, cos then they'll pack them right in!

The sardines for the sardine roll came from a tin, but were very tasty, although a little messy (as they put some of the tomato sauce in the roll aswell). Each bite had the savoury tomato-ey sardine flavour. Mmmmm.

The chicken one (not pictured) was packed with a lot of chicken, although the chicken was moist and well seasoned, it seemed like "ordinary" chicken meat filling. It tasted OK, but I prefer the pork or sardine versions. CB did mention that hers was packed with chillis and that her mouth was burning.

After eating one and a half rolls, I was quite full. The benefit of driving to Girrawheen? I guess they are made fresh, and a little more variety.

17 Apr - Bánh Mì Thịt from Local Asian Grocer

These are really really good. I have been eying off these bread rolls from the local Asian grocer for awhile now, but have been putting it off because I knew they had coriander in it. But today, I bit the bullet and decided to try one.

This particular roll has pork belly, carrot, cucumber, coriander and pate. The carrot and cucumber were pickled and contrasted well against the fatty pork and what I presume was butter/margarine. Wikipedia says that Bánh Mì Thịt can also contain headcheese, but it wasn't listed on the packet. There was also some chilli which packed a bit of a punch and was thoroughly enjoyed. At $4, they are cheaper and tastier than Subway. The coriander wasn't overpowering which was good. The butter/margarine/possible headcheese was also oozing a bit, and if I was able to get one freshly made up, would request a little less.

Turns out these are made locally, Girrawheen in fact. On the packaging, it says they are open 7 days a week, 5AM - 4PM. Wonder if I can get them cheaper from Girrawheen instead?

11 Apr - The Sorrento Beach Shack, Hillarys

Today for lunch, CB and I met up with her family for Lindah's birthday. We met up at the Breakwater Tavern at Hillarys and then walked around for a bit before settling at this place.

For a drink, I had a "fantale" milkshake. Tastewise, it didn't taste like caramel/chocolate, and it wasn't very strong either. It was quite thin also, being a milkshake.

I had a Sorrento Burger, "which was a beef burger with bacon, cheese, bbq sauce, lettuce and tomato with fries." It was edible, but a bit bland. Combined with the large shake, I was struggling to fit it all in.

10 Apr - Sam & Colleen's Wedding, Matilda Bay Foreshore

Yesterday was Sam and Colleen's wedding, down near UWA. The ceremony was in the shady Sunken Gardens, whilst the reception was in a marquee down on the foreshore at Matilda Bay. The reception started off with canapes, which included various sushi rolls, breaded mushroom and pumpkin thingies, smoked duck soup spoons and satay chicken skewers. Dinner consisted of the following 3 courses, along with wedding cake:

Cajun chicken salad.

Sirloin with mashed potato, broccoli, carrot and sweet potato shavings.

Pear gelato, encased in white chocolate with a fudge sauce centre.

4 Apr - Darlington Estate Winery, Darlington

Today, most of the family, Aunt Jen & Stan and Gaz headed to Darlington for lunch, as we had some international guests from Singapore. Most of us had been here 3 years prior for dinner and had enjoyed the experience.

To start with, I had an affogato ($6). Man was this strong! With the icecream and one sugar, this was still a little bitter. I would've liked a little more coffee but would've needed more sugar to compensate.

Due to time restraints, we went straight to mains. I chose the "Pistachio and sage crusted lamb rack on olive and rocket potatoes with minted pea puree and thyme jus", and specifically asked for it to be rare. I got rare! I'm glad I did because a couple of others ordered the same dish and their racks were cooked all the way through. The lamb was deliciously tender, and the potatoes were a tad overseasoned (the olives were salty) but went well with the meat. The minted pea puree was OK but not really my cup of tea. I would've loved more meat (about 4 or 5 bites haha), but what was there was really really good.

CB and I shared sweets, and went for the "Apple tart tartin with cinnamon anglaise and double cream". This was very sweet and I'm glad that we shared instead of me having one to myself. It was a little on the expensive side for what we got, but it was still enjoyed.

1 Apr - The Swinging Pig, Rockingham

Due to someone leaving the company, last Thursday, a group of guys from work had a half day and headed off to the closest pub from work to grab a bite to eat and drink. Our program manager allocated us some cash for food and drinks, so the food tasted even better cos it was free. I ended up with a steak sandwich, washed down with a Strongbow.

The sandwich was pretty good, although a little hard to eat because I couldn't get my jaw over it. There was steak, bacon, cheese, onion, tomato and lettuce, all the good things in a steak sanga. The sweet chilli sauce was salvaged from a shared bowl of bacon cheesy wedges.
