12 Dec - Pearl's Diner, Felixtow

Another American styled place on my second week in Adelaide, this one had smoked pulled pork. It was good with the soft bun. I would've loved a full sized bun with some coleslaw on top but it wasn't on offer.

The vanilla milkshake had real vanilla bean icecream in it and there were flecks of vanilla in the glass. It was thick, looked like it had more icecream than milk, a truly good milkshake!

The buttermilk chicken wings are crispy and when cracked open, were real juicy. The wings were a decent size but weren't quite there flavour wise. A brine to get some seasoning in the wing would've made these really good.

The Burger #1 consisted of lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and truck sauce. The bun was soft, just like the pulled pork, the meat had decent flavour, this burger was very good.

The waffle and icecream with Belgian chocolate sauce was sweet, sweet and sweet. The chocolate sauce was rich whilst the waffle had a decent bite to it even after being smothered in sauce.

Overall, whilst the burger choice is rather limited (a choice of 5), the one that I had was done really well. Wouldn't hesitate coming back next year when I'm back in Adelaide but won't be able to due to the shifts involved.

11 Dec - Simply Sushi, Glenelg

A quick meal in a sushi train out in Glenelg. The sushi here wasn't bad, the various ones that I had were different to the ones I've tried out in Perth. The dessert was very sweet and was small bits of cake and meringue held together with cream.

10 Dec - Benny's American Takeaway, Blackwood

I found the place last night while perusing Urbanspoon and needed to try it. Unfortunately they did not have any pulled pork which was something I wanted to try. However, I ended up with a full rack of ribs, chilli cheese fries and 3 hot wings, with a caramel thickshake to wash it all down.

I was hoping the ribs were smoked (like typical low and slow BBQ), however they weren't very smokey at all. They weren't falling off the bone, but were cooked long enough for the meat to come mostly clean off the bones. The sauce was nice and sour.

The chilli cheese fries I left to eat last and unfortunately the cheese had set. The chilli had a decent heat and was seasoned well, however overall the dish was a little salty with the seasoned fries and chilli. I can imagine it'd be even saltier with the cheese too.

The chicken wings were crisp and were quite hot due the sauce. The sauce didn't seem to have much flavour though (apart from the hotness).

All in all, prices were very reasonable and food was decent. I was expecting smokey goodness but was a bit disappointed that it wasn't. Maybe one day I will come back when they have pulled pork for me to try...

09 Dec - BBQ City, Adelaide

A Cantonese roast house, where I got three meats (char siu, siew yuk and siew gnap). I much prefer my local joint, there was no chilli oil here! But they did have decently sized wontons (although one had a bit of bone), and they also had alcohol!

05 Dec - Burgastronomy, North Adelaide

I finally made it to Burgastronomy after walking past on Monday and finding out it was shut. And I made it in good time too, as while I was eating my meal, the place suddenly filled and a queue was beginning to form. Wanting to try a few things on menu, I opted for the following:

Trucker burger. Beef, Lettuce, Bacon, Egg, Cheese, Caramelised Onion, Tomato Ketchup & Mayonnaise
Sweet potato fries.
Southern Fried Chicken
Cheese & Bacon Stuffed Jalapeno Pepper

The burger was tasty and messy, the way a burger should be. Plenty of flavour from the beef and bacon.
Sweet potato fries were good but then got sickly at the end. They were lightly battered, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. A great option would be to be able to have half normal and half sweet fries, but they don't offer this.
The fried chicken was good. 3 decent size of boneless chicken, similar to KFC but different enough to make it unique.
The jalapeno was a bit of a disappointment. I was really looking forward to this. The batter was unfortunately way too thick and made it a bit of a stodge to eat.

04 Dec - Glenelg BBQ Inn, Glenelg

It's a good and bad thing that this place isn't in Perth. Good cos I would be about 10kg heavier. Bad cos it isn't in Perth. This place in Glenelg was busy when I walked in off the street but was seated in a few minutes.

I ordered the Texan T-Bone (800g) with a small bowl of chips. Prices were more than reasonable. The steak was cooked perfectly and had a great taste from the charcoal that it was grilled on. The accompanying salads were simple but cut through the fatty steak and the chips were fluffy in the middle and crunchy on the outside. They were well seasoned.

Props to the chef behind the 3 charcoal BBQs .. takes skill to have plenty of steaks, kebabs and chevups on the BBQ, all being cooked to perfection. Might be back next week to check out some other stuff on the menu.

03 Dec - Lucky Lupitas, Bedford Park

This Mexican place seems like in the middle of nowhere but seemed quite busy when I went in (I later found out it was a quiet night!). As soon as the door opened, the smell of spice, rustic tables and music in Spanish made me feel like I was in Mexico, although I have no basis to compare to.

Having skipped lunch, I grabbed a few tacos and some ribs, along with some Mexican soft drinks. I grabbed the following:

Taco de pato - guajillo-lime braised duck with orange-panela, crispy red onion , basil, red cabbage & cilantro
Taco de carne - braised beef with radish, guacamole, salsa Mexicana & cabbage
Taco de pollo - slow cooked chicken with lettuce, chipotle mayo slaw, crispy onions, cilantro, mole verde & tomatillo salsa
Lucky Lunch Ribs - our wood smoked & slow cooked beef short ribs

The photos suck. The place was small and I felt embarrassed taking photos of my food so tried to disguise it with the flash off.

The soft shell tacos were good, the flavours of the beef and duck were better than the chicken one. Each one squirted a bit of liquid when I bit into them, but they were tasty and different to my usual Old El Paso bastardized versions.

The beef ribs were falling off the bone and had a decent whack of smoke to them. There were a few dry bits but overall, the meat was fatty and rich. Teamed with the rice, it filled the void quite nicely.

When going up to pay, I also ordered a mango Jarritos. Definitely prefer the lime version.

02 Dec - Sato Japanese Restaurant, North Adelaide

I want to try a place called Burgastronomy but I failed and didn't check to see if it was open (it isn't on Mondays). So after walking around, I ended up at this Japanese place. I ordered a Sato special and pork katsu skewers, along with a Kirin beer and waited for my meal like a nigel no friends.

The sushi was OK .. there was a fair amount of wasabi underneath and I must admit I like a little less than what was given. My nose was definitely clear after finishing the plate.
