Home style chicken hor fun

As Kylie Kwong would say, this is my version of chicken hor fun, inspired by the dry fried beef hor fun I had in HK. This was a mix between the horfun and char kway teow, and included chicken (der), bean sprouts, onion, spring onion, garlic and chives.

I got quite a bit of wok hei but I need to get the seasonings right. Whilst I did use soy sauce, it wasn't salty enough. With pickled chillies though, this went down rather well.

23 Apr - Mez Cuisine Restaurant, Northbridge

A group of us headed into Northbridge on Easter Saturday to celebrate Aunt's birthday. The chosen destination was Mez Cuisine, on James Street. We were recommended the meze menu and 6 out of 9 decided to go for the meat and seafood option. The set menu was $45 per person.



1st Course - Trio of Dips, Pitta & Salad. The dips that I had a taste of included hoummus, tzatziki and a fish egg based one. Out of the three, the fish egg was the best. The others had olive and a capsicum one which looked good. The pita bread was served piping hot and was a good starter.



2nd Course Seafood - King Prawns, Fish Fillets, Mussels, Scallops, Calamari, Occy. We weren't given mussels cos they were out, I'm not sure if we got anything substituted. All the options on this course were delicious. There was some mushroom risotto underneath the prawns which was very tasty and creamy.



We were also served a Greek salad which was nicely dressed and fresh.



3rd Course Meat - Lamb Kleftiko, Chicken & Pork Souvlaki served with Roast Vegetables. Starting to get a little full at this stage, but wow, the lamb was melt in the mouth tender. I got to eat a lot of lamb as everyone else was starting to feel the pinch, and CB not eating red meat. The souvlaki was OK, but after eating the lamb, paled in comparison.



4th Course - Dessert Plate to Share. Not a big sweets fan, this was my least favoured course. I gave my Turkish delight to CB and ate my baklava, orange cake and Galaktopourekko.



I also had an affogato during the dessert round. The icecream was a little icy on its own, but once mixed into the coffee, was delicious.

7 Apr - The Brook, Ellenbook

Last Thursday was dinner at a newish pub in Ellenbrook, called The Brook for CB sister's birthday.

I went for the chicken caesar salad. It was filled with cos lettuce, croutons, bacon, chicken and a boiled egg. I quite enjoyed this, although my jaw was slightly saw from chewing the cold bacon.

CB and I shared a bowl of wedges. At $8, this was a huge bowl. It was served with sweet chilli and sour cream, but I didn't use much of it because the wedges had their own seasoning which was quite nice, with a little added pepper for good measure.

01042011770The last day of the holiday started off with breakfast consisting of Old Chang Kee and Starbucks. Observing Lent, I had two giant fishballs, a sardine-o and a grande caramel machiato.

After returning to the hotel to finalise packing and check out, we headed off to Iluma shopping centre to have some lunch. After perusing the eateries on the fourth level, it was decided to try the Tastes of Hong Kong cafe.

01042011771I had an icecream coffee, which I think is a white coffee with a scoop of icecream. I’m not sure if condensed milk was used or not but this was very sweet, borderline too sweet. Once the ice melted slightly it was a bit better.

01042011772CB and I shared some spring rolls. The menu said the pictures were for illustrative purposes only, and whilst the spring rolls looked good on the menu, they turned out to be tiny. The picture with my pinky finger illustrates the size of each roll. They weren’t very tasty either.

01042011773The seafood fried rice was edible, but a little bland and pretty salty. I think the only seafood was a bit of prawn. Scrambled with a little egg, that was pretty much it. Not even a hint of wok hei either.

After sitting at the cafe for awhile, it was decided to quickly grab one last sundae at Swensens. The crew at Bugis Junction Swensens were happy to give us some priority treatment after asking them to be served within half an hour. After taking our order, the sundaes came in lightning speed, minutes compared to the half an hour at Serangoon.

01042011774Not much to say about the Coit Tower, except this one was freshly made (the bananas had not even been chilled by the icecream when we received them) and went down a treat, although by the end I was struggling to fit it in.

We were picked up by the transfer service back at the hotel. The bus ride to Changi Airport took awhile due to multiple crashes on the PIE. Whilst we had plenty of time to spare, the bus driver clearly didn’t know how to slip a clutch and constantly jerked the bus in the stop start traffic. I was beginning to feel sick but managed to keep my sundae and lunch down.

After saying our goodbyes and buying some duty free, we were on the plane and dinner was served after an aborted attempt due to turbulent weather.

01042011775I chose the fish option, in which I was able to eat everything except for the big piece of ham in the pasta salad. The fish with rice was OK, although nothing to rave home about. The pasta salad would’ve been great with the ham but it was still tasty without.

Dessert was this icecream of sorts. More like a vanilla mousse as it was quite airy and light.
